Graphic Novels — How to Keep Up

In recent years, graphic novels have become more and more popular to readers of all ages. In order to stay informed on how graphic novels can benefit your library, here are some resources you can put to use:

The Diamond Bookmark
Diamond Comic Distributors' monthly e-newsletter features articles and title recommendations specifically with librarians and teachers in mind. Sign up for it at http://bookshelf.diamondcomics.com/subscribe.asp.

The Diamond Bookshelf
With this publication -- and its accompanying website (http://bookshelf.diamondcomics.com), you'll find articles designed to introduce you to the world of comics and help you learn how to integrate them into your collection. You'll also find testimonials from fellow librarians, reviews and a number of other comics related links and resources.

Library Wholesalers
Many wholesalers and publishers also offer informative websites and catalogs that can keep you up to date on the latest goings on in the world of graphic novels. Jobbers, such as Baker & Taylor, Ingram, and BWI can also be helpful.

Your Local Comic Shop
Comic shop retailers are another good resource for learning background information and measuring the pulse of the industry. Many offer Previews — a monthly catalog of upcoming comic books and graphic novels published two months in advance. To find a store near you log onto http//www.comicshoplocator.com or call toll free 1-888-COMIC BOOK (1-888-266-4226).

Your Library Staff and Patrons
Sometimes the best information source is an individual who comes into the library or works on the library staff. Don't be afraid to talk about graphic novels to these people-you'll be surprised with what you learn.

Web Sites
Visit news web sites about comic books-for example, http://www.newsarama.com and http://www.comicon.com/pulse. There are many others.
